"Världens nordligaste spårväg" – "The world's northernmost tramway"
Minimg town Kiruna is located 145 kilometres (90 mi) north of the Arctic circle, and about 500 meters above medium sea-level. Founded in 1900, all business and more or less all life revolves around the giant LKAB iron ore. Climate is harsh, with long, snowy winters and short dry summers.
Here a narrow-gauge tramway was built to the benefit of the miners. all rides were free already from the opening in 1907 and continued to be so to the comfort of the miners until it was replaced by ordinary buses in 1958.
Long gone, not yet all forgotten, authors Raymond Hedman and Per Rickheden gives an in-depth history of this, the world's northernmost tramway.
